Frankenstein in the middle

You wait and you wait and you wait.  When will we meet Victor's creation?  We've read 100+ pages of turgid prose and then finally, finally, we meet the "monster"?  Does he look terrible?  Apparently, yes.  Is he kind?  Yes.  Is he helpful? Yes. Why does he get beaten?  Because of his appearance.  Why does Victor hate him?  Well, he does have reason by now (the deaths of William and Justine) but Victor hated him when he saw him.  Is the creature really a creature or is he what is inside of Victor come to the outside?  Is this all psychology?  The Id all by itself?
The Shadow, as Jung would put it?  The character hid down in the basement.
But he's not that bad.  He sort of fits the scene: so big and terrifying that people look at it to get a frisson of fear.
